Anorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder that affects about 1-5% of our population and it is growing fast. Basically, when you have anorexia you starve yourself or eat less food than you normally should so you become thinner. You become very skinny and your body starts to malfunction. Most people with anorexia are dissatisfied with their appearance and think that they are more overweight than the actually are. Some people will do anything for the “perfect body”. This disease will end in fatality if nothing is done to help. I am here to raise awareness in our community and prevent you from this horrible disease.

Anorexia was first written about in 1860 by Louis-Victor Marcé, a French author. He describes it as “a stomach disorder that develops in adolescent teens”. It was later clarified as anorexia in the 1940’s. Back then, this was a rare occurrence. Now think about how much you hear about the disorder on TV and in magazines. There is much growth from then to now.

How do you develop anorexia? Can it be cured? These are two frequently asked questions about Anorexia Nervosa. The first question, how do you develop anorexia, is still not precisely knos.wn today. This disease is neurological. So, this disorder is most likely developed from pressure. Pressure to be thin like models and popular celebrities.

This graph shows that 95% of anorexia sufferers are female. Before researching anorexia, I did not even know men could develop this disease. Men and Women have the same exact problems with anorexia; they starve their selves to become thinner. There is no difference. But why are female more prone to anorexia? This is still not known today. My hypothesis is that woman read more glamor magazines and high fashion magazines than men. In high fashion and glamor, the models are very thin. So, these magazines show “beautiful”, thin models and the reader pick up on the images. The reader then becomes self-conscience and points all their imperfections. Then they become obsessive about it and start to starve their self.
